The Norwegian Minister for Culture and Church Affairs, Ms. Valgerd Svarstad Haugland visited Egypt September 17 - 21 in connection with the Beacon for Freedom of Expression Conference 2004 at Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The conference was opened by the library’s Director Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Minister Haugland and . Dr. Ali Eldin Helal, Professor of Political Science, Cairo University. Among the participants from Norway where Ms. Mette Newth, Chair of International Steering Committee for Beacon, Mr. Frode Bakken, President of the Norwegian Library Association, Professor Rune Ottosen, Norwegian Steering Committee, and Ms. Elin Urkedal, Director of Kopinor.
Minister Haugland also gave a lecture at Mubarak Public Library on September 19 on Freedom of Speech, Libraries and Dialogue between Cultures.
