With the support of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a music-collaboration between Norway and India within the genres jazz and rock has been realised and developed since 2002. This programme will from 2008 be funded directly from the Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi. Rikskonsertene/Concerts Norway and the The Great Indian Rock Festival have collaborated on musical exchange since 2005.
The first Norwegian band to feature at The Great Indian Rock Festival was WE, in 2005. The same year, festival manager Amit Saigal went to Norway to scout for artists at the Norwegian rock festival Øyafestivalen. In an interview with music site ballade.no, he described Norwegian rock as music with a distinct identity, both aggressive and rich on emotions, and he further proclaimed the Norwegian black metal scene as very well known in India. Saigal also revealed that he during the festival had fallen for the performance of the Norwegian black metal group Satyricon.
Saigal’s bandscouting in Norway has brought results, bringing bands like WE, El Caco and Enslaved to India. This year Satyricon will rock India’s metal fans.
Even though rock is seen as a sub culture in India, The Great Indian Rock Festival gathers 7000-8000 people each day of the festival. This year, the festival will grow even larger as it will tour seven cities. Satyricon will perform in Mumbai, Delhi and Banglore between 1 – 7 November.
Satyricon was one of the first bands to establish themselves on the Norwegian black metal scene, and is still in the major league. They are hailed by the critics and winner of several prestigious music awards, such as ”Best live act” (Alarm Award 2001), and they received two awards for the album Volcano (Spellemannprisen 2002 and Alarm Award 2003). A new album from Satyricon - The Age of Nero - is expected 3 November, when the band is on tour in India.
