Specialists / highly skilled workers, with or without an offer of employment, can apply for a visa in order to travel to Norway and start a new job / look for a job and apply for a work permit at their local Police station in Norway. The visa (referred to as a job seeker visa, regardless of whether you have an offer of employment or not) can be issued with 1 entry and up to 90 days.
Once the applicant has been given a written offer of employment, he / she can bring this, along with the documents described below and 2 application forms for a work permit to their local Police Station (in Norway). In most cases, the Police can process the application and issue a temporary work permit, enabling the applicant to commence working immediately.
Specialists / highly skilled workers wishing to apply for a job seeker visa must submit the following documents (Originals or certified true copies):
- Your passport or travel document
Make sure that your passport is valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended stay in Norway and that the passport has a blank page for a visa sticker.
- One recent colour passport size photograph
The photos must be less than 6 months old, have a light background and be of good quality (must be taken in a photo booth or by a professional photographer). For more information, please click here (please do NOT use paperclips or staples to attach the photos to the application form).
- Original (or certified true copy) -
- Proof of Qualifications (e.g. Degree Certificate(s), Course Certificates, etc)
- ‘Offer of Employment’ / Contract of Employment (if applicable). If you do not have an offer of employment, please submit proof that you have sufficient funds to support yourself in Norway for 3 months (e.g. bank statements for the last 3 months, credit card statement with credit limit, etc).
- Birth Certificate (not a requirement when applying for a visa, but must be presented when applying for a work permit in Norway)
- Travel insurance
Applicants who have been granted a visa must produce valid travel insurance.
If you do no have a job offer, you must submit proof that you have sufficient funds to support yourself for 3 months.
If you are currently in employment, an original letter from your employer confirming your employment position and level of expertise can often aid and speed up the application process, but is not an initial requirement.
