The Nidaros Cathedral's Girls' Choir to Tour in the Midwest and NY

The Nidaros Cathedral's Girls' Choir from Trondheim, Norway, will embark on their first American tour this spring, singing at concerts in the Midwest and New York. The choir will perform at concerts in Minnesota, Wisconsin and New York in the beginning of April, bringing their acclaimed music to US audiences.

The choir was founded in the fall of 1992 and has grown to become one of the major contributors to the musical life in the Nidaros Cathedral and the city of Trondheim. There are 85 members of the choir, and the girls are split into two groups based on their age. The Girl Group consists of girls from 10 to 15 years old, while the Youth Group has girls from 15 to 20 years old. The latter will go on tour to the United States. The conductor is Anita Brevik, who also serves as the artistic leader for the choir. She has been conducting the choir since the beginning.

The Nidaros Cathedral's Girls' Choir sings regularly at concerts and services in the cathedral, and they also work frequently with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and other musicians in their hometown of Trondheim. In 2002 they released their first CD, entitled "Som en rose" ("Like a rose"). The choir also sang at the wedding of Princess Märtha Louise in 2002 and at the Japanese emperor's visit to Trondheim in 2005.

However, they have also gone on tours to for instance Prague, Budapest and Oxford. The choir won a gold diploma at the European choir competition "Musica Mundi" in Budapest in 2003. Recently the choir released a CD with Vivaldi's Gloria, and last year they cooperated with St. Olaf College Choir on a Christmas concert that was aired on PBS in the States. They will also visit St. Olaf College on their upcoming American tour, solidifying the bond between the two choirs.

The concert program for this tour includes Norwegian, Swedish, English, Latin and German songs, spanning the musical spectrum from traditional Mozart to Norwegian folk-songs. Their first American tour looks set to be another highlight of an impressive list of musical accomplishments. There will be concerts in Minnesota, Wisconsin and New York.
